About Ampol

Powering better journeys, today and tomorrow.

Our company has always been about more than fuel. Fuel may be the foundation of our business, but our motivation and purpose comes from the people, businesses, industries and communities we engage with.  From our origins until today, we’ve always been inspired by the role we can play in people’s lives – to keep them moving, to make journeys happen. Here at Ampol, we are proud of our heritage as Australia’s only owned fuel brand.

For over 100 years we have supported Australians to travel far and wide, and we’ll be here for 100 more powering better journeys for today and tomorrow.

About the role:

At Ampol, technology is a strategic enabler of our transformation, growth, and customer ambitions. We're looking for an exceptional technology leader to establish and lead our newly created TDD & Engineering Capability function.

This is a rare opportunity to define the vision, shape the operating model, and build a high-performing engineering organisation that delivers enterprise-wide impact. You'll lead multiple engineering disciplines and play a pivotal role in ensuring Ampol's technology platforms are secure, scalable, resilient, and ready to support the future of our business.

You'll influence technology strategy at the highest levels, partner with senior leaders across Technology, Digital & Data and Group Functions, and help drive the engineering excellence, automation, innovation, and operational resilience that will power the next chapter of Ampol's evolution.

This is more than a technology leadership role. It's an opportunity to build capability, shape culture, elevate engineering standards, and create the conditions for teams across Ampol to do their best work.

Key Responsibilities

As Head of Technology, TDD & Engineering Capability, you will:

  • Develop and execute Ampol's platform and engineering strategy, ensuring alignment to both business and technology objectives.
  • Establish and lead a newly formed engineering capability, creating a high-performance culture built on accountability, innovation, continuous improvement, and operational excellence.
  • Provide leadership across Infrastructure, Platform Engineering, DevOps, Integration, Networking, Cloud, End User Computing, Quality Engineering & Testing, and Robotic Process Automation capabilities.
  • Drive engineering excellence through modern software engineering practices, standards, automation, DevSecOps, platform engineering, and continuous delivery.
  • Partner closely with Architecture, Cyber Security, Digital, Data, and business leaders to deliver enterprise technology outcomes.
  • Ensure technology platforms are highly available, secure, resilient, and fit for purpose across a complex enterprise environment.
  • Build and develop future leaders through coaching, succession planning, capability uplift, and talent development.
  • Identify emerging technologies and platform opportunities that create competitive advantage and long-term business value.
  • Balance innovation with risk management, ensuring strong governance and technology decision making.
  • Lead technology investment decisions, optimise platform costs, and improve service quality and performance.
  • Communicate technology strategy, risks, priorities, and outcomes clearly to executive and senior leadership stakeholders.

What you’ll bring:

This is a role for an influential technology leader who thrives on building capability, leading large-scale change, and delivering outcomes through others. You'll bring a track record of creating high-performing engineering functions and the ability to inspire teams around a shared vision. Comfortable operating at both strategic and operational levels, you'll combine deep technical expertise with strong commercial acumen and exceptional stakeholder leadership.

You'll also bring:

  • Extensive leadership experience in senior engineering, infrastructure, platform, or technology leadership roles, including leading leaders and large multidisciplinary teams.
  • Proven success developing and executing enterprise technology and platform strategies in complex environments.
  • Deep expertise across cloud, infrastructure, networking, platform engineering, DevSecOps, CI/CD, automation, and modern engineering practices.
  • Experience building and scaling engineering capabilities that improve reliability, resilience, security, and organisational effectiveness.
  • A strong product-minded approach, balancing business priorities with technology outcomes and customer needs.
  • Demonstrated success driving transformation, modernisation, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Strong commercial capability, including budget ownership, vendor management, and cost optimisation.
  • Exceptional communication and influencing skills with the ability to build trust and alignment across executive, technology, and business stakeholders.
  • Experience managing enterprise environments spanning cloud, on-premise, and hybrid technology landscapes.
  • A passion for developing people, fostering inclusive cultures, and building the next generation of technology leaders.
